Social Security for Children and Youth
Social Security can provide vital support for children with disabilities by helping families manage the financial challenges that often come with extra care needs. While children don’t work, the Social Security Administration recognizes that some disabilities can significantly impact a child’s ability to function like other children their age. Monthly SSI (Supplemental Security Income) payments can help cover basic needs such as food, housing, and medical care, giving families more stability and the ability to focus on their child’s development and well-being.
For children, SSI is the main type of Social Security benefit available. It is based on the child’s level of disability and the family’s income and resources.
A child may qualify if they have a physical, intellectual, or mental health condition that seriously limits their ability to function, and if the household meets financial eligibility rules. There is no work history requirement for children to qualify for SSI, but their application must include medical and other documentation showing how the disability affects daily life. When the child turns 18, Social Security will review their case using adult disability criteria, and they may transition to adult benefits, including the possibility of receiving SSDI if they qualify through a parent’s work history.
Getting started can take time, but with the right information and support, families can successfully navigate the process and access benefits that make a real difference.
