Social Security Resources for Adults

Social Security provides essential financial support to people with disabilities who are unable to work or earn enough due to physical, intellectual, or mental health limitations. These challenges might make it difficult to hold a job, work full-time, or earn enough income to cover basic needs like housing, food, and medical care. Social Security offers monthly payments to help support stability, independence, and overall well-being.

There are two main types of disability benefits through Social Security: SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance). SSI is based on financial need and is available to people with limited income and resources, regardless of their work history. This includes children with disabilities and adults who may not have worked enough to qualify for SSDI.

SSDI, on the other hand, is based on work history and Social Security taxes paid into the system. It is available to individuals who have a qualifying disability and enough work credits, and in some cases, their family members may also be eligible.

Some people may qualify for both SSI and SSDI at the same time, this is called “concurrent benefits.” This usually happens when someone qualifies for SSDI but receives a low monthly payment due to limited work history, and their total income and resources still meet the SSI requirements. In these cases, SSI can help supplement their income to better meet their needs.
