Aging and Log Term Support Administration (ALTSA)

In Washington State, ALTSA (the Aging and Long-Term Support Administration) helps people of all ages who need extra support with daily living activities, things like bathing, dressing, meal prep, or managing health needs.

While many families think of ALTSA as mainly for older adults, it can also support younger people with disabilities after age 18, especially if they have physical disabilities or need help because of a medical condition.

Families would apply to ALTSA instead of DDA (Developmental Disabilities Administration) if their child does not meet DDA’s developmental disability criteria but still needs significant daily support. ALTSA services may include in-home caregivers, personal emergency response systems, or help coordinating long-term care. A big difference is that DDA is based on having certain developmental disabilities that begin before age 18, while ALTSA looks more at someone’s care needs and functional abilities, not just diagnosis.
